John G. Esposito, Editor                              FALL 2008

With May 2009 and the next reunion getting closer, it's time to start thinking about topics for discussion at our business meeting. Any policy changes are certainly fair subjects.  Even if you won't actually be attending the reunion, your thoughts are still welcome. Anyone with a subject that you'd like to have discussed, please write it up and forward it to me.  I'll see that it gets a fair hearing.
I know I've said it before (and you can bet I'll be saying it again) but we're still looking for your biographies for our web site. Also, more Irving Glick stories. Please, let's hear from you.
I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years. Be well.

As of this writing, our website has had just short of 25,000 visits (how many of those are yours?). We (primarily Bill Locke, Dan Dwyer, Dale Woods, John Esposito, and myself) try to keep the site accurate, current, informative, and easy to use. From time of receipt, information/ data is published to the site within that week. Photos can take a bit longer, especially if I have to scan them.

Here's a brief synopsis of some of what the VPB-111/ VP-21 Veterans Association website has to offer.

Membership Roster
Contains all VP-21 and VPB-111 veterans who are known to the Association by way of a postal address, email address, or whom we have tracked down through investigation or referral from other members.
VPB-111 and VP-21 Rosters
Each of these rosters contains the names, rank/ rate, and period of service for members of their respective squadrons. These rosters were compiled from various sources, including squadron microfiche records, other websites, and members' memories and records.
History Page
Contains formal history, rosters by year, flight crew lists, training schedules, social rosters, and more.
Deceased Roster
Contains all members, VP-21 and VPB-111, who are known to be deceased. Deceased date is listed if known.
Lost and Found Page
Newly found and recently deceased members are listed here. Newly found members who supplied an email address can be contacted by clicking on their names. If an obituary was available for a recently deceased member, clicking on their name will take you to their obituary in the Departed Shipmates Page.
Biographies/Profile Page.
Contains autobiographies or profiles of our members, past and present. Presently there are only 52 entries on this page. I encourage all of you to please send me your biography/ profiles so that our membership and your family may be enriched further.
There are 229 entries here by ex-VPers who surfed the web and found our site. You'll find many interesting comments. Please visit and leave your own "Kilroy" statement.

Photo Gallery
There are presently 34 gallery contributions here, spanning the entire history of VPB-111 and VP-21 from 1943 to 1969, plus past reunions. These galleries contain literally thousands of photos of people you knew, places you've been, and the aircraft you flew, maintained, or otherwise supported. It's a great 'memory lane' trip.
Reunion Page
Keep abreast of everything you need to know about upcoming reunions here. Dates, location, hotel info, prices and more can always be found here.

My thanks to all who have contributed to our website over the years.
Recently, Manfred J. "Moosejaw" Lenz sent me his copy of the 1963 Med Cruise book. You can view it at Photo Gallery #25.
This week I also received a letter and packet of biographical info from Donald K. Johnson. Some of you will no doubt recall Don as "Chief Johnson" who ran the AT shop in `58-`59. The chief just celebrated his 90th birthday at his home in Esparto, CA. Some of you may know the chief as W6AAQ, since he is a legendary Ham Radio Operator who has been continuously licensed and operating since1935. Putting this packet of info together into a biography will take a bit of time, but keep tabs on the Biographies Page where it will appear soon. If you want me to send you an email when it is finally published, drop me an email to that effect.

It is with deep regret that I make mention of the passing of our following shipmates:
James C. White, World War II Navy radioman
veteran, died on Feb.21, 2008. He was 84 years young.
Rodger Silas Jones. No details available.
Doug Evans.  No details available.
May they rest in peace.
ERRATTA to the TAPS article which appeared in the summer edition of our  newsletter: George Milkowski served in VP21 from '52 to '54, not '62 to '64 as originally stated.

Your prayers are continually requested for the speedy recovery of Donna Locke, wife of our Chairman, Bill Locke. She is presently hospitalized.

Nov. 6, 2008 was a memorable day.  I was asked to participate in a Veteran's Day Celebration by a local school that teaches K-8 grade.

To experience over 1000 youngsters ages 5 - 15 gathered for the purpose of remembering veterans, was extremely warming.

We were treated like royalty, given escorts, applauded, sung to, and hugged.

All branches of service were recognized and the respective songs were played in honor of each.  Anchors Aweigh never sounded better.

I was asked to sign autograph books and personally thanked by children that never heard of Cuba or Viet Nam.  Some were aware of Iraq as they had relatives there and became quite outspoken about their feelings and concerns.

I will remember this day for a long time.  The tears were genuine on our part and appreciation swelled our chests.  I'll do it next year and all years to come.
