“John William Swobland, 80, of New Bern, formerly of Ayden, passed away on Saturday November 18, 2017 at Carolina East Medical Center. He was born in Ohio on September 22, 1937 to Clarence and Elenore Hoffman Swobland. John was preceded in death by his wife, Rebie Rouse Swobland, his parents and one brother, Clarence “”Pudge”” Swobland.
John was a member at Ayden County Club where he enjoyed playing golf. He would attend church at Ayden Pentecostal Holiness Church where his wife was a member. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and retired after 20+ years of service. Upon retirement he accepted a civil service position with Cherry Point Marine Corps Base, where he continued his work as an Aviation electrician for 20 more years and retired. He was a loving companion, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his fiance;’, Nancy Hunter. John and Nancy were high school sweet hearts. They both went their separate ways, married other people and were both widowed and reconnected after 50+ years. He also leaves behind one daughter, Connie Alphin and husband, Kenneth of Blounts Creek: a son, Ron Sandlin and wife, Karen, of SC; three grandchildren, Kenny Alphin and wife, Margaret, Brian Alphin and wife, Cesia and Mandy Friedrick and husband, Stephen. He also leaves behind five special great grandchildren children.
Flower are welcome or Memorial Contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 61, New Bern , N.C. 28563. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 pm at Farmer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service from 2 to 3 pm. Interment will follow in the Ayden Cemetery. You may send condolences to Farmer Funeral Service-Ayden.
